The 2023-2024 school year was my first at Iola-Scandinavia Middle/High School. Before accepting this position, I researched the district. I was impressed with how I-S Middle/High School provided students a small-school feel with big-school opportunities.  There were many options available for students in both academic and athletic pursuits. Having now become a part of the school, I found that there is so much more to be impressed with.

The communities of Iola and Scandinavia are kind and welcoming. Food at area restaurants is top-notch. Community events are time honored traditions generating excitement and a sense of belonging. Outdoor recreation is abundant with water, state lands, and trails everywhere you turn. The communities are supportive of public services such as street maintenance, garbage collection, police/fire, library, and schools. I have been very happy with my move to Iola. It's a great place to live.

The employees of the school district, once just names on the website, are now friends and colleagues working together for a common goal; creating an environment where our students are safe, accepted, and growing. I am inspired by our teacher’s willingness to go above and beyond, to think creatively to help students succeed. They are dedicated, collaborative, and knowledgeable. 

The opportunities for students are even more plentiful than I first thought. Not only are there many different courses offered in-house but a large number of students take advantage of courses through the Erving Network, Start College Now, and Early College Credit programs. Being centrally located between two technical colleges and two UW colleges makes these attractive options for students. 

Last, but certainly not least, the students and families of I-S Middle/High School have been a true joy to get to know. There is much talent in the student body with many opportunities here to showcase that talent whether it be academic, athletic, or artistic. They care about their future but are also typical teenagers who like to have fun, hang with friends, and keep the adults who care about them on their toes. Parents/Guardians are supportive of not only their students but of school personnel as well. 

It is wonderful to work in a place where so many different dynamics are working together to accomplish our mission: Empower all students to explore, grow, and thrive in the world.
